SVU Player is an app and website by Elbruz Technologies that replays recorded Syrian Virtual University (SVU) teaching sessions. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. It applies to the SVU Player apps for iOS and Android and to this website at https://svuoffline.org.
Short version
SVU Player has no password login and shows no advertising. Replaying recorded sessions needs no identity at all; joining a live session verifies your university identity with a one-time code emailed to you (never a password). Beyond that, it collects no personal information unless you choose to send us feedback. Recordings you download and any captions or summaries you generate are stored only on your own device. Session audio or its text leaves your device only for audio enhancement, captions or the AI summary, and only to produce that result.
What we store, and where
- On your device only: session recordings you save for offline viewing, generated captions, and enhanced audio are kept in your browser or app storage on your device. We cannot see them, and they are removed when you delete them or clear the app data.
- No password login, no profile: replaying recorded sessions needs no identity; joining a live session verifies your university email with a one-time code but never asks for a password, and the app does not create a user profile.
- No personal data collection: we do not ask for your contacts, location, photos, or similar information. Your name and email are asked for only in the optional feedback form, and you can leave them empty.
When data leaves your device
Browsing SVU sessions
When you browse or download a session, the app contacts our server, which in turn requests the session list and files from the university's public session service on your behalf. These requests carry the choices you make (such as term, course and class) but no personal account details.
Captions (optional)
If you turn on captions, the session audio is sent to our server and then to a speech-to-text provider (OpenAI) to generate the transcript. The audio is used only to produce the transcript and is not used to identify you or build a profile. The transcript is returned to your device and cached there.
Audio enhancement (optional)
If you turn on audio enhancement, the session audio is sent to our server, cleaned with a noise-reduction filter, and the improved audio is returned to your device. It is not kept after processing.
AI summary (optional)
If you ask for an AI summary, the text of what was said in the session is sent to our server and then to an AI provider (OpenAI) to write the summary and chapters. It is used only for that, and the summary is returned to your device and stored there.
Audio enhancement is on by default and you can switch it off with the Enhance button. Captions and the AI summary stay off until you turn them on.
Live sessions and identity
Recorded sessions need no identity. To join a live session, the app verifies that you are an SVU member: you enter your university username, and a one-time code is emailed to your university address. Entering the code confirms the address is yours. We never ask for your university password.
The one-time code is temporary: it is held only briefly on our server to check against what you enter, expires after a few minutes, and is not kept afterwards. Once verified, your device stores a short-lived signed token (valid for a few hours) so you can rejoin without repeating the code; it records only your university handle and an expiry time, and no password.
While you are in a live session, our server relays the live screen and audio from the university's class server to your browser, and relays any chat messages you choose to send back to that session, where they appear under your handle, just as the university's own live classroom works.
Feedback (optional)
The app may ask once for your feedback. If you send it, your message and, only if you fill them in, your name and email are sent to our form provider (Formspark) and delivered to us by email, together with the app language and version. We use them only to read and answer your feedback, and we do not share them.
Hosting and analytics
The website and its server functions, including the live-session relay, run on our own server hosted with DigitalOcean. Standard server logs (such as IP address and request time) may be processed to deliver the service and protect it from abuse. The website uses Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to measure page views and basic usage; this data is processed by Google and may involve cookies or similar identifiers. We use it only to understand overall usage, and the app shows no advertising.
Children
SVU Player is intended for university students and the general public. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
- Leave captions and audio enhancement off to keep all audio on your device.
- Delete saved sessions from within the app at any time, or clear the app or browser data to remove everything stored locally.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as the app changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. For any question about privacy, contact contact@elbruz.com.
